Dr. Evingerlean D. Blakney Partners With Shaw University NAA To Celebrate First-Generation History At The South’s First HBCU

In the heart of the South’s educational legacy stands Shaw University, a beacon of history as the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the South. The professionals and visionaries nurtured within its historic embrace now weave a tapestry of generosity and impact, as they bestow their brilliance upon the world.

Among these luminaries is Dr. Evingerlean D. Blakney. As a 2009 first-generation college graduate of the university, Blakney left a near-decade-long career in academia for entrepreneurial pursuits that are now shining the light on the illustrious institution.

Like an alchemist of inspiration, she launched The First-Gen Shop in 2021, the first-of-its-kind store featuring apparel and stationery made to inspire, empower, and uplift first-generation scholars and professionals across the globe.

Repping her HBCU with pride, Blakney recently announced the release of The 1865 Collection at The First-Gen Shop. The new collection features a cascade of attire that celebrates the rich legacy of Shaw University’s first-generation history.

Absorbing the moment, the Shaw alumna shared, “I’m over the moon to share a first-of-its-kind partnership with the National Alumni Association of Shaw University. I’d like to give a special thanks to Executive Vice President Eric McLean for his openness to innovation, enthusiasm to collaborate with fellow alumni, and unwavering support in bringing this idea to life.”

A portion of the collection’s proceeds will be contributed to scholarships for current undergraduate students at the institution. The apparel company is poised to unleash a roaring tide of garnet across the campus during Shaw University’s 2023 homecoming celebration this October.
