R&B Soul Artist Sheila

EMOIR: When did singing become your life’s passion? How did you know this was your calling?

Sheila: I’ve loved music and singing since I was a child. I’ve always felt that I would like to pursue singing as a career. After years of performing at family, church, and community events, I knew it was my calling. Observing my impact on others and receiving encouragement from those around me inspired me to pursue a music career.

E: How has the music industry inspired you as a growing artist?

S: I’ve been inspired by many women in the industry before and even now. I feel encouraged to be bold and fearless while maintaining my feminine energy. Artists like Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Beyoncé are among some of my greatest influences.

E: Let’s discuss your debut EP, “Black Butterfly.” How was the lyrical process and the production of this EP?

S: It’s been a wonderful and rewarding experience. My music producer, Christopher Niles Madden, is a long-time family friend and an immensely talented musician. Spending time with him and my husband in the studio has been therapeutic. Chris sends music for me to listen to. I usually seek out time alone to meditate on it. After that, I write and sing what comes to my heart and mind. Then, we collaborate in the studio as a final step. [Christopher] produced all the music on this EP. Typically, [he] sends me music tracks, and I write the lyrics and create vocal arrangements.

E: “Black Butterfly” has five tracks. Which one is your absolute favorite?

S: My favorite song on the EP is “Moving On.” It expresses my personal growth as a result of self-care and self-love. This track also captures the spirit of the most confident and sassy facet of my personality.

E: Would you improve or change anything about your journey?

S: No. Every experience, whether positive or negative, has contributed to shaping both me and my music. My parents, husband, and many friends and relatives have supported me throughout this journey. Most of my family and friends are people of faith. Our prayers and faith in God have been a strong foundation in providing support and encouragement throughout my music journey.

E: Is there a message or advice youd give to other upcoming Black Women artists trying to make it in the industry?

S: Never give up. Always do it because you love it. If you keep love as your motivation, the love of the art will sustain you during difficult times.
